This charming walkway, often dubbed the world’s most romantic path, runs between the picturesque villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola.
Unfortunately, it has been closed since 2012 due to a landslide that injured tourists, prompting extensive repairs.
The Allure of Via dell’Amore
Spanning about 1 kilometer, the Via dell’Amore links five delightful villages that form part of the Cinque Terre UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The path hugs the coastline, providing stunning views of rolling landscapes and the expansive sea.
Originally constructed in the early 1900s to aid railroad workers as they moved between Riomaggiore and Manarola during tunnel work, this trail stands as a tribute to the region’s fascinating history.
Carved into the rock that borders the sea, the path has long been a symbol of romance, serving as a meeting place for couples from the neighboring towns.
Recent restoration has reinforced the area with steel mesh while also planting 8,800 new flora to enhance the region’s natural beauty.
An advanced monitoring system has been installed to provide warnings of potential landslide threats.
Addressing Overtourism on the Romantic Path
The Cinque Terre region, consisting of five uniquely vibrant villages, draws nearly 2.4 million visitors each year.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled within a breathtaking national park, has been facing the challenges brought on by overtourism.
To safeguard its charm, local officials have introduced measures, including hefty fines—up to €275—for tourists who block pathways or traffic while snapping selfies.
The president of the Liguria Region remarked on the importance of the Via dell’Amore, describing it as an invaluable asset for both the area and its visitors.
To better manage the influx of tourists, a new reservation system will limit access to 400 people per hour.
Visitors can book their spots in advance online or purchase tickets from park ticket booths.
Beyond the Via dell’Amore: Exploring the Cinque Terre
The enchanting Via dell’Amore marks the beginning of the famed Sentiero Azzuro, known as the ‘Blue Path.’ This popular hiking route connects all five villages within the stunning Cinque Terre National Park.
Approximately 12 kilometers in length, the Blue Path commences in Riomaggiore and winds its way to Monterosso al Mare, passing through the scenic villages of Manarola, Corniglia, and Vernazza, reaching heights of about 200 meters in Vernazza.
Hikers looking for adventure can tackle the entire route in about five hours, as the path is divided into four distinct segments.
Access to some trails, including this one, requires a park entry fee.
Along the way, trekkers will encounter checkpoints to purchase the Cinque Terre Trekking Card, broadening their access to various park facilities.
This pass costs €7.50 for a single day or €14.50 for two days.
For those eager to see all that Cinque Terre offers, there’s a special card that not only grants access to hiking trails but also allows for unlimited travel on the Cinque Terre Express trains connecting Levanto, Cinque Terre, and La Spezia.
This option is priced at €18.20 for one day, €33 for two days, and €47 for three days, with discounts available for children, seniors, and families.
